Mesmerizing Mesh
For several years, Haegue Yang has been studying the ambivalent relationships between
spirit and matter in mystical practices from European paganism to
Asian shamanism. This interest led her to become interested in different
traditions of paper cutting and its sacred dimension. Hanji, paper
Traditional Korean handmade tea made from mulberry bark, including
inspired the Mesmerizing Mesh paper collage series.
After their meeting in Paris, during the opening of the exhibition at the gallery
Chantal Crousel in 2022, Haegue Yang and Nicolas Bureau had the conversation
which accompanies the works reproduced in this work. Together, they have
talked about shamanism, travel, the status of artist and that
of anthropologist, and to transcend the boundaries that separate the fields of
knowledge.
