Multiple Realities: Experimental Art in the Eastern Bloc 1960s–1980s - Multiple Realities offers a broad survey of experimental art made in six countries from Central and Eastern Europe - the GDR, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia - during the 1960s to 1980s. Despite their geographical proximity, the artists working at this time have encountered different conditions in their daily lives and in their artistic work, and have faced varying degrees of control and pressure from state authorities. \nBy embracing innovation conceptual or formal and the spirit of adventure, Multiple Realities highlights light on the way artists have refused, circumvented, evaded and subverted official systems, thus creating works often imbued with wit, humor or irony. While presenting canonical figures of the region, The exhibition highlights lesser-known practitioners, particularly women artists, artist collectives and those exploring embodiment in through an LGBTQ+ lens.
