  • It is 2001 and Argentina is plunged into a serious political crisis and economic. Rocío, a nineteen-year-old girl, moves into the old his grandmother Vilma's house, shortly after the funeral of this last. In this environment marked by absence, Rocio remembers life by Vilma, a story tinged with tragedy that begins in the 1920s in Italy. Vilma's parents fled the country shortly after her birth, when Mussolini's rise to power. Arriving in Argentina penniless, they did not can finance Vilma's studies. She must then leave school, then is forced to marry a neighbor after becoming pregnant and being abandoned by the man she thought she would spend her life with. The story of Vilma in this patriarchal society will be a long series of disenchantments and sacrifices, which will gradually make her grumpy. Vilma will end her living alone, having cut ties with most of her family, the exception of Rocio. The young girl, who asks herself a lot of questions about his future, will try to learn lessons from this family tragedy. Ambitious, ample, teeming with numerous narrative discoveries and graphics, Naphtaline is partly inspired by the history of Sole's family Otero. The narration over several eras, the inventiveness of the cutting and the staging, the play on colors, make this graphic novel a pretty discovery and of Sole Otero an author with a bright future.
