NEW SKIN
NEW SKIN
Deeply touched by Donna Haraway's writing, NEW SKIN is the
Mayumi Hosokura's proposal for a new way of thinking about identity,
body and desire. This is a single large-scale digital collage
which Hosokura created from clippings from old magazines
gay, statues and photographs she found, as well as her own
photos - by deliberately choosing to use only images from
male characters. Then cut into 12 separate elements, the fragments
which result blur the boundaries between man and woman, between
man and animal, between living and non-living beings; works
hybrids that reimagine what it means to be human and disrupt the
social conventions of desire. Drawing on feminist theory and the
current technological innovations, NEW SKIN predicts what the body will be like
the future in an era where digital and biotechnology technologies
evolve.
