Okame
Okame
The artist's book "Okame" is Hideoki Hagiwara's first book, a
Japanese photographer who distinguished himself as a fashion photographer in the
United States. “Okame,” a traditional mask symbolizing a Japanese bride
joyful, inspired Hideoki a unique series during his visit to Japan in 1973
with his American wife, Mary, and their child, Mitsu. The playful use
of the mask gives rise to a series of photographs with Mary which put
subtly questioning the norms of Japanese society.
