Portraits of women
Portraits of Women collects two essays by Virginia Woolf: “Julia Margaret
Cameron" (1926) and "Ellen Terry" (1941). In both of these texts, Virginia Woolf
was able to capture the liveliness, audacity, intelligence and inventiveness of two
exceptional women: Ellen Terry, a remarkable English actress, known in particular
for her roles in Shakespeare's plays and appreciated by Woolf, as well as
Julia Margaret Cameron, the famous photographer. Virginia Woolf, Ellen Terry,
Julia Margaret Cameron, writer, theatre actress, photographer
: three women who have literature in common, three women who have words in common
wrap like the sails in which some of the models are wrapped
who pose for Julia Margaret Cameron. With these two portraits, Virginia Woolf
therefore returns to the life and work of two exceptional female artists and
incomparable ones that have left a lasting mark on their time.
