At first glance, the photographs in Primal Mountain appear to depict alpine landscapes. But upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that these are not mountains in the literal sense, but topographies composed of artificial materials. Amazed by the beauty and its perception of a postcard, Yuji Hamada, inspired, questioned the principle of mountains in general. The manufactured landscapes in his images thus play tricks on our perception, raising questions about what drives us to recognize mountains as such. The back of each page shows an enlargement of the image on its front side, further blurring the line between reality and fiction.
