FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ART HISTORY
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF ART HISTORY
The text of the Fundamental Principles of the History of Art, published in 1915 and
constantly revised by its author as and when re-editions were published, has known in
French two reprints of the translation made by Marcel and Claire Raymond in
1952, published by Plon, taken over by Gallimard, and Monfort in 1991 then in
2006 and Pocket in 2016 have simply reissued. A scientific translation
updated and supported by philological work on the editions that this
essential text of the history of art is necessary today. This text,
moreover, has become almost unreadable as his readings have been so loaded with
prejudices. Hence this proposal for a new translation and a presentation
by two of the best connoisseurs of Kunstwissenscha in France. Our
edition, at the same time as it will respond to all the attacks which the author has
the object (formalist, classical, reactionary or even racist) will provide a
reading key and will open an essential space for reflection today.
Many clarifications are indeed necessary to address this great
art history text.
