When the wind blows
When the wind blows
James and Hilda Bloggs enjoy a peaceful retirement in their pretty little
house in the middle of the English countryside. They are tender and have no one for
the other than smiles and sweet words. Their daily life flows at a rhythm
quiet, far from the worries of the wide world and the dull threats of the
cold war.
But one day, their radio station relays alarming information: tensions
revived, strikes imminent… “Get ready, the Bomb is coming!!”, the
warns the government. Fortunately, James brought back from the library a
official guide to surviving an atomic attack. So don't panic, just
to follow his instructions until the alert is lifted and everything will be back to normal
in order. Unless?…
Raymond Briggs, a British author previously known for his children's books,
published in 1982 this evocation of the nuclear apocalypse mixing tragedy
and comedy. A fierce attack on states ready to put the life of any person at risk
a population to win an international confrontation, When the wind blows
wind is still terribly relevant. It is also an intimate story
of great emotional strength. Drawing inspiration from his own parents, Briggs
portrays, not without a certain causticity, a couple of characters as endearing
that are naive, but still animated by a force of life which pushes them to believe in
best, to the point of blindness.
