Samsara - Photographed on the English coast at Dungeness, Samsara is influenced by Shiraishi's childhood memories of visiting his grandparents' house in the Japanese countryside, and the realisation he had on that occasion: the natural and the artificial are both part of the landscape, of nature. At Dungeness, balance reigns: life and death, yin and yang, black and white. This duality of place is reproduced in the design of the book. The images glow, the black pages balance the white, the viper stones puncture the paper. The full-bleed images are occasionally interrupted by pages of differently textured paper. By collapsing time and space, Samsara brings us closer to the emotions and landscape of Dungeness - a cobbled headland stranded on the edge of England.
