SICILY 1966/2008
For forty years, Gianni Berengo Gardin has continued to return to Sicily.
Disregarding all folklore, he was interested in religious events,
Easter, documenting the Sicilian people's relationship with the sacred. Grandmaster
photography, he was able to perfectly capture the link between mourning and
celebration, as well as that between devotion and curiosity, always concerned with
contextualize his subjects in the environment where these events take place.
His photos, taken while immersed in the crowd, directly convey the
feeling of participation in these rites through the curious gaze of a
photographer producing images not on commission but on his own
initiative. The images are accompanied by the words of Ferdinando Scianna, a
another master of photography, and the anthropologist Franco La Cecla, who
looks at the origins of these rituals.
