different artistic genres (portraits, still lifes, landscapes, etc.). He

This is the case of the photographic work of Carlijn Jacobs which privileges as
narrative axis that of the tale to which the work makes direct reference here.
As in Charles Perrault's story, Jacobs' heroines seem
to navigate between two worlds, a kind of waking dream. Without seeking to free oneself
of reality, the photographer juxtaposes the fantastic and the common in settings
eccentric and generous scenes where artificiality disrupts our bearings.
Fascinated by the mask, Jacobs enjoys the game of appearances; if the disguise
is just a form of the ordinary lie in which we all participate, the
mask reveals a symbolic radicalism in that it claims the right to
be different. Sleeping Beauty is an excursion to the heart of unusual and
baroque where counterfeit creatures evolve in the splendor of opera and ball
masked. The theatricality, extravagance and generosity of Jacobs' images
sign a moral rebellion against constraints and norms

Carlijn Jacobs is a photographer and filmmaker based in Paris. Born in the
Netherlands, she studied photography at the Willem de Kooning Academy in
Rotterdam, where she was recognized very early on for her precise and sharp gaze.
