Solar egg - Artist duo Bigert & Bergström have long been interested in producing sculptures and installations that are conceptually and technically complex, but with a touch of humour. While their work often addresses serious issues of social and environmental sustainability, humour plays a key role in their practice. The idea for Solar Egg arose from the ongoing geographical repositioning of an entire town, Kiruna, in northern Sweden. After decades of tunnelling, the former mining town is due to be relocated due to the risk of collapse. When Riksbyggen, one of the developers involved in the town’s reconstruction, decided to commission a public artwork that would engage the community, the idea for a fully functioning sauna was born.
