SOME OF US - CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS - ILLUSTRATIONS, COLOR
Some of Us is an anthology of contemporary artists bringing together more than
1000 images (visuals of works, views of exhibitions) since the beginning of the 1990s
2000 to the present day in France. Drawing up a panorama, both retrospective
and prospective, of the diversity of French scenes, this anthology participates
to the visibility of more than 400 artists through a selection of their works
and exhibitions.
Created in 2019, the curatorial and editorial platform Some of Us sets the
question of the under-representation of female artists in the visual arts. If
the place of women in art is today being reconsidered, the situation is
far from being fair: their visibility continues to be a minority. We have also
We have engaged in close collaboration with artists, curators
exhibitions, art critics, institutions, gallery owners, collectors
in order to bring out a first story dedicated to contemporary artists — the
women, artists of color, non-American and/or queer artists,
trans and non-binary — in France for the past 20 years.
To complete this research in the history of contemporary art, a committee
editorial was formed alongside the artistic and scientific direction
from the anthology: two artists Katia Kameli and Claude Closky, Marie Chênel&
Matylda Taszycka - for the AWARE association, Guillaume Mansart - Director of the
PACA Artist Documents Network, Julie Crenn - Art critic & curator
independent, Cédric Fauq - Chief Commissioner / Capc Bordeaux and Sarah
Ihler-Meyer - Art critic & independent curator.
These visual archives are preceded by a documented text which traces a
multiplicity of stories, those of the artistic and curatorial scenes in
France as well as many artistic, theoretical, aesthetic and
philosophical issues related to it. This text puts into perspective several
significant works, research and exhibitions of the last twenty years.
Completed with several indexes, this anthology is designed as a work of
reference and a working tool for artists, art historians,
researchers, amateurs, as well as for all those who
are interested in the history of contemporary art and the visibility of these
contemporary artists.
Thanks to the graphic choices made, the anthology can be browsed by
readers in a non-linear way, highlighting the path of these
more than 400 artists. This editorial act constitutes a form of exhibition in its own right
whole.
