Strassenbilder is the first monograph dedicated to the important series on the
Street photography by Lukas Hoffmann.
By using a camera, Hoffmann takes the opposite approach to
this practice by approaching very close to his subjects to capture them,
spontaneously, without looking into the viewfinder. He thus takes postures
fleeting, fragments of bodies, of gestures, sometimes dazzled by a light
direct, brittle, precisely highlighting skin textures,
hair and clothes, which sometimes overflow the frame. The composition
complex image bringing into play different planes and sometimes leaving
the artist's silhouette appears, questions the intrinsic temporality of the
photographic medium.
This large-format work, which highlights the dizzying feeling that grips the
viewer throughout the series, consists of a very
packed with photographs from the original series. It is accompanied by an essay
by art historian Anne Bertrand, who reveals the different prisms of
work of Lukas Hoffmann and contextualizes it in the history of photography
contemporary. The text will be published in a bilingual version: French/English,
as well as in German in a leaflet inserted into the book.
