Magic Land

The house's third book on the carnival theme, Tierra Mágica, addresses the rituals and masquerades of the northwest of Spain. The photographer's work Yannick Cormier transcribes this stupor that seizes us when faced with these characters both frightening and attractive. The book is constructed on an alternating rhythm black and white photographs (taken on film) of foggy landscapes and sudden appearances. These masquerades have crossed the centuries and wars by transforming themselves little. They can now be seen as the resurgence of an animist world preceding Christian expansion. We could almost to say that these costumes embody the pagan earth, in opposition to the sky divine: all the wild nuances are reinterpreted in the adornments animal, vegetable, or chimerical.
