  • Tremble Tremble - Combining Brechtian theatre techniques of estrangement with elements drawn from pop music and film, Dublin-based artist Jesse Jones creates films and performances that reference historical instances of communal culture while resonating with contemporary life and politics. The publication accompanying Ireland’s pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale borrows its title – Tremble Tremble – from the 1970s Italian campaign “Wages for Housework”, during which women chanted “Tremate tremate, le streghe sono tornate!” (Tremble, tremble, the witches are back!). "Drawing on this movement," writes pavilion curator Tessa Giblin, "Jones links the memory of witch hysteria to the oppression of women and their reduction to the status of unpaid domestic workers. She reestablishes the witch as a feminist archetype, a disruptor with the potential to transform reality." Tremble, tremble, the witches are back!
