Live, conquer
Vivre, vaincre is a creation of the Claire Fontaine collective, which draws its
substance of about fifty books of which he retains the fourths of
cover. Claire Fontaine questions here the status of the book by revealing the
circulation of the discourses surrounding it: the back cover,
combining commercial signs, hooks and arguments, is a symbol of this.
The work thus juxtaposes fifty-four fourth covers, reproduced
as is, with multiple authors, anonymous and with mandatory mentions –
ISBN, price –, emphasizing their nature as a commercial and renewable object. The
The second part of the book lays out the transcription of the information contained
on the fourth – summaries, bibliographical or biographical notes – under the
form of a single text arranged thanks to the intervention of the artist (cut-up,
cuts), such as "a constantly interrupted and violently mutilated story of
revolts and resistances”. This book continues Claire Fontaine’s reflection
on the book object started in 2006 with, in particular, the creation of brickbats
– bricks wrapped in flat blankets – which question
impertinently the power of language on bodies and the relationships between
culture and goods.
