New means of transport and equipment that appear in the middle of the
The 19th and early 20th centuries offer new ways to explore
the world. Transatlantic liners, caterpillar cars, long-haul planes,
zeppelins, express trains allow other experiences of travel and
unfold new horizons. From now on, distant countries are no longer
only accessible to aristocrats, explorers and adventurers in
all genres, their discovery opens up to travelers with multiple curiosities
: scientists, artists, dandies, archaeologists, writers, secret agents,
traders... For all, the world becomes a book that can be browsed more
easily, luxuriously or picturesquely. The five continents are
crisscrossed, crossed, traveled on foot, by sled, by bike, by Jeep, in
steamer, or flown over in a balloon, seaplane, glider... These means of locomotion,
new for some, give a different view and perception of space,
landscapes and places, the ends of the world become tangible. These means of
traveling the world also constitutes new instruments of
knowledge. Over the course of fifty epics led by great travelers
but also by eccentrics, sportsmen, adventurers, this work
will discuss the most astonishing journeys undertaken since the middle of the 19th century
to the present day.
