Wild Grass
Wild Grass
Growing up in a small town in southern China during the app
strict one-child policy in the 1980s, JT witnessed
of the heartbreaking reality of a newborn girl and disabled children
abandoned due to economic difficulties. In 2014, during a trip, he
met “left behind children” whose resilience and vitality
deeply impressed him. Reflecting on their struggles and the future
Uncertain of what awaited them, JT couldn't help but wonder about the
fate of the little girl abandoned in her childhood memories. This
experience led the photographer to embark on the “Wild Grass” project,
which involves documenting the lives of children in unofficial orphanages
from China. Many of these children suffer from physical and/or
mental, but most of them are not recorded in the system
official households, which prevents them from obtaining basic social care and
medical assistance through the social protection system.
JT's visits to these orphanages revealed the difficulties they face
are faced with, including lack of funding and lack of
specialized knowledge in the care of children with disabilities.
Despite these obstacles, he lived among the children, seeking to understand their
everyday life and give them a voice through photography.
