  • A major figure in contemporary European graphic design, Wim Crouwel (1928-2019) marked the history of the discipline through his extensive practice of design, applied to both the cultural and commercial fields. During Throughout his career, he has produced both typographic creation work and visual identities, signage, posters, publishing work, or and exhibition scenography. He was also director of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam between 1985 and 1993. This work constitutes the first publication in French on the work of Wim Crouwel, including The influence is confirmed today among the younger generations. From the 1950s, and during the following decades, this Dutchman, whose influence extends far beyond the borders of the Netherlands, has managed to develop an approach to graphic design combining modernist heritage with the fantasy of pop. Through three texts written by Wim Crouwel, Catherine de Smet and Emmanuel Bérard, this work bears witness to the diversity of the work of Wim Crouwel and looks back on his work on visual identities, publishing, or poster creation. Profusely illustrated, this book focuses on particularly on the layout of catalogues produced for museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, as well as on the genesis and presentation of the New Alphabet, created between 1964 and 1967. This work is a reissue updated from the version first published in 2007 on the occasion of the inauguration of the exhibition “Wim Crouwel, Typographic Architectures?”: 1956-1976” at the Anatome gallery in Paris.
