Collect, imagine, dream, record: Over the past forty years
For years, photographer Nigel Shafran has kept a notebook handy
hand. In Workbooks, Shafran brings together a lifetime of creative collecting and
creation, where the lines between the personal and the professional are blurred and
flexible. These working papers are informal books, but, in part
to prepare the decisions that will later define the publications themselves
say, they are carefully assembled and richly embellished. Each of them is
filled with drawings, notes and ephemeral objects from everyday life, as well
than photographs, and each one has a particular aesthetic, with a
easy sense of material craftsmanship as well as simplicity and clarity
visuals that are characteristic of the intuitive organizing principles of
Shafran and his entire work process.
