Acts of Resistance And Repair – Artist and photographer Gauri Gill (b. 1970) has been examining the daily lives of the rural population outside India’s urban centers for over two decades. His calm, concentrated photographs focus the viewer’s gaze on peripheral areas of Indian society that are barely perceived. In an open, dialogical process that avoids documentary conventions, she has devoted herself to concerns related to survival and self-affirmation, identity and belonging, as well as conceptual questions of memory and authorship. The exhibition and book bring together around 200 pieces from Gauri Gill’s pivotal series as well as the long-term project Notes from the Desert. Special attention is given to Gill’s collaborative approach and his work with rural artists; edited by Esther Schlicht, b.w. and color photos.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (Frankfurt, Germany) from October 13, 2022 to August 1, 2023 and at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk, Denmark) from January 26 to April 10, 2023.
