Heat – These archives from the 50’s to the 90’s are the fruit of the work of Astrophysicists who worked from the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille. Some of these images were firsts in their time.
For a long time confined in a cupboard, these images of space have gradually lost their function and their scientific utility. However, they escaped the fate of many documents without function. They have not been destroyed but made available to the artist Caroline Corbasson who explores all the poetry in a work developed with the photographer Andrea Montano.
The book and its images will be accompanied by a text by historian and curator Luce Lebart: “With or without captions, these images of stellar fields torn from their context of production and use resemble as much a photogram of dust clusters as they do a magnification of the photolytic structure of the grains of silver that constitute the image. The fascinating beauty of these photographs oscillates in the vertigo between the immensely large and the immensely small, between the star and the stain, between the dust and the star. And the borders are porous between a scientific image and an abstract image offered to the aesthetic delight. The intention differs, certainly. These osmoses between scientific images and artistic images recall the malleability of photographs. And this malleability is indeed one of the specificities of photographs. They have this immense facility to raise one day of the field of the science, another of that of the archive then of the art to be again considered as documents and finally all at once.”
