My Own Private Sketchbook (1) – My Own Private Sketchbooks, a tribute to Gus Van Sant and his film “My Own Private Idaho”, compiles a very large selection of drawings, made over the past 4 years, in accordian notebooks.

These notebooks began to make their way into Magistry’s practice a while ago. For the artist, they reproduce the wandering of a character, like a long tracking shot or a single scene without cuts. This idea continued and became a compilation of Magistry’s references: a totality of the images he saw and recorded daily in his laptop. Saving them digitally meant forgetting them, so Jules decided to redraw and restore all of the images, so that they would become his own. In this notebook, without interruption, the images have a meaning together, like a mapping of his tastes and inspirations as time goes by.⁠

This project exists so that Magistry could see the colors that he loves changing, the music that inspired him, the films that obsessed him… over more than 4 years. It also presented the possibility to see if there was only his network’s algorithms that organized his tastes or his heightened sensitivity. His drawings are now grouped, by color, in an even greater continuity.
