Rien, presque – A collection of fragmented photographic images and visions that draw their iconography from public spaces or motifs of modernity.
These images represent demarcations in the urban landscape that function as minimalist sculptures generated by human actions. Mazzoni sees them as traces of waking dreams, catalysts of poetic resistance, small time capsules that illuminate the world. Like Vilem Flusser’s philosophical thought, this book is about the “state of things”, the relationship between things being even more significant than the things themselves. In these images, we discover the aestheticism inherent in what is in our proximity, in the banal and the everyday. As we flip through the book, the relationships between these images that seemed disparate at first become visible. The recurring forms are invisible lines of connection that concentrate into an abstract story.
Michel Mazzoni (born 1966) is a French artist based in Brussels, using photography and video installation. He develops a “plastician” photography that goes back to the sources of the photographic act.
