Shirley Jaffe – At the invitation of Frédéric Paul, nine artists, from both sides of the Atlantic, look at the work of the American abstract painter Shirley Jaffe.
Settled in France from 1949, Shirley Jaffe (1923-2016) belongs to the second generation of abstract expressionists. A stay in Berlin in the early 1960s marked her departure from gestural painting. From then on, her work invested a rich repertoire of colored abstract forms, nourished by urban visual complexity.
Frédéric Paul was born in 1959. Curator of contemporary collections at the Centre Pompidou, he previously directed the Frac Limousin and the Domaine de Kerguéhennec. A critic and art historian, he has published numerous works in France and abroad. He is particularly interested in the historical conceptual scene. He is curator of the retrospective exhibition of Shirley Jaffe circulating from 2022 to 2023 from the Centre Pompidou to the Kunstmuseum in Basel and the Musée Matisse in Nice.
