Lock Packaging
Lock Packaging
More than just a retail space, Shrub serves as a base for people to come together, create, explore,
discuss, and collaborate. In true D.I.Y spirit, Shrub upholds and celebrates the sacred gift and
culture of self-taught skills, encouraging exchanges and knowledge sharing between peers.
Shrub finds its home within a cozy former locksmith joint established in the 70’s. It is a place
steeped in history and familial significance to its founder, Fern, who was raised by their
grandparents within its walls. Retaining the locksmith’s original features and relics was a
deliberate choice to preserve its history, while adding layers to its evolving timeline. Fern applies
different methods of archiving through publications, t-shirts, and other various mediums.
Documenting, reinterpreting and giving new context to these archived content, while careful not to
glorify its nostalgia. This is an “important” practice in fast-gentrifying cities such as Singapore,
where small businesses and local spaces often face the risks of being shut down. In this book are
the scanned archives of locks found stacked to the ceilings that make up the backdrop of Shrub.
