  • Rooms began in 2017 when Greta started photographing her friends, acquaintances, and strangers lying nude in their bedrooms. The portraits, shot at close encounter, radiate the warmth of presence and mutual recognition. In some photographs the women look unselfconsciously elsewhere, their eyes drawn out of frame in some distant reverie. The hot presence of a mind and her body remains, still floating, in Greta’s images of beds unoccupied. There is an inalienable relation between person and object such that the object itself—the bed—is charged with its own psychic significance and characterful agency. Made up, unmade, clean, cavernous, beds and bodies maintain a visceral intimacy. Some of the bedrooms in this book have since moved to a new location; some of the bodies have carried children. The project is, then, an ethnographic endeavour of sorts: an attentive act of consensual observation and documentation of 38 women and the bodies and beds they inhabited in a certain room at a certain moment in time.
