Test Department brings together an accumulation of tests and studies originally produced on wood panels by Belgian artist Charline Tyberghein (°1993) since her graduation from the Royal Academy of Antwerp. Offering a kind of library of spellbinding paint samples, it demonstrates the artist's mastery of trompe-l'œil techniques and op art effects to deceive the viewer's gaze.
In Tyberghein's work, highly simplified objects are reduced to symbols and pictograms, which are then inflated to achieve maximum yet ambiguous legibility. Mundane objects and universal symbols are reclaimed by the artist to translate his most personal experiences, transforming them into a new, parallel language.
